We don't focus on politicians directly but the seats that politicians hold so that the community has a better understanding of roles and the accountability required for each seat. Our goal is to break down political duties in their simplest terms so that when it's time to vote on a particular politician they are aware of what they will be accountable for essentially making more accurate and educated voting. This program is conducted by local community members, elected officials & attorneys experienced with politics. We are committed to helping them understand & believe in their own individual power by goal setting and self esteem building activities. In addition to gaining community service hours that puts them on the track to graduation outside of the program, our young Queens are also taught real life skills by experienced professionals & community leaders. Most of which are of similar background in the Metro Detroit area. Many teens have goals but don't know the road to take in order to achieve them. Having a solid support system makes finding the right path as simple as making a phone call. As the weeks progress, there is an added bonus of accountability from their peers as we go over the 5 levels of accountability and set intentional direction with their community big sisters. Fostering new relationships & new mindsets of sisterhood among the group. Each week of EYQ touches on important layers of growth & success. From mirror activities extinguishing limiting beliefs to a group Interview with a local entrepreneur. By the end of the program all of our participants leave feeling empowered & ready to conquer the world! This activity is conducted by the Women of NECC & women entrepreneurs at each cycle's chosen school. The goal of the whistle system is to arm women and children with high-quality whistles that they will be able to utilize as a distress signal in case of an emergency. The sound of the whistle will alert people in the community that someone is in danger and to get to the area where the sound of the whistle is coming from immediately! The purpose of the whistle system is to deter predators from committing dangerous & deadly acts on vulnerable women, children, and elderly while alerting people in the community that someone is in danger. We ask that while walking alone you keep the whistle around your neck or in your hand and stay extremely conscious of your surroundings. This program is conducted by our chosen Program Lead with organizing assistance from volunteers.. We choose which area we will be working in based on the need in each zip code and the areas that we covered previously. In order to cover a wider area & ensure even distribution of resources, we typically go back & forth between the East Side and the West Side Of the city we are in. With this program we go door 2 door in different residential communities in the inner city with vibrant music, a powerful message and important resources related to the area we are in. Each year, 800,000 children are reported missing in America and around 300,000 missing women. Every month we put on a class and have a professional instructor come to work with women & children in the community as a form of preventive measures. This activity is conducted in different communities when done in person & online occasionally. This activity furthers our purpose by staying true to our mudroots initiative & is based on the principle in our organization of Community Accountability. Holding ourselves accountable to the safety of the women, children & elders inside of the community while connecting them to the skills needed to do so. This is a 6 week program which starts in the late summer early fall right before the holiday season when we typically start to see an increase in crime and violence. When you think about a vast majority of crimes in the inner city they all stem from people not being able to resolve conflict. Senseless violence, innocent people being killed, babies being murdered these things are becoming far too common in inner cities throughout the country. Many of the "stop the violence" programs in America have proven to be ineffective. Focusing on violence is a reactionary action where focusing on resolving conflict before any violence occurs is proactive and much more effective. Twice a month we partner up with schools & colleges all over the city and work with the youth & young adults with our Think First Conflict Resolution Program. Helping them catch conflict at the early stages and resolve issues before they reach a boiling point is very critical. Twice a month, once with high schoolers and once with young adults we host Conflict Resolution seminars and workshops with a key focus on communication. Black home ownership in Michigan alone has dropped more than any other state by 11 percentage points, according to a 2018 article in the Detroit Free Press. This is a huge problem since numerous studies show that obtaining home-ownership not only offers a secure way to build wealth but social & economic benefits inside of our communities as well. This is why one of our goals is to implant the thought of purchasing a home into future millennial homeowners/investors by showing just how realistic it can be to own with the right tools! All of our partners are community driven and volunteer their skills & knowledge in exchange for Quality leads and increasing local knowledge for people who may not typically have access to this information. In spite of all of the strides people of color have made over the past 50 years in America, it remains harder for blacks to get the credit they need in everyday life. The current credit scoring model ends up eliminating many African Americans and young people that are otherwise credit worthy, making them in effect "credit invisible". When a person is credit invisible it becomes harder for them to get started, or to move forward after and respond to life's challenges. Once a month we partner up with finance & credit professionals for our program where we help people in our community understand and effectively use credit, build credit and repair credit. We also teach people in our communities how to budget and invest funds as well. This activity is conducted by Credit Counselors, Financial Advisors & the Financial Literacy Team of the organization. Crime in the inner city is relentless and the fact of the matter is most of the time when the police are called, it's after a crime is already committed. The purpose of our Streets Is Watching Program is to have visible body's out in high crime areas during critical times of the day. We focus primarily on the protection of women, children, & elders patrolling throughout different high crime communities keeping an eye out for women or kids walking the streets, single mothers who may be arriving home for the night, elders taking out the trash, etc. This activity furthers our exempt purpose by creating an environment of self sufficiency in our communities by having the people who live in the areas that we patrol get involved. During these 4 weeks we pick a particular trade to teach students. In addition to learning the trade they also learn how things are ran on the business end. As they learn the trade and learn the business they are given an opportunity at the end of the course to start their own business as we assist them with registering their business and filing for their articles. Classes are 4 days a week 5 hours a day for 4 weeks. Average class size is 10 students. This activity is conducted by Local business owners at their place of business depending on the type of business chosen for the summer. This activity furthers our exempt purpose by encouraging self sufficiency through connecting the youth to resources related to business ownership. We pick a location in the inner city to give back groceries, hot food, resources, and much more. The goal is to get people in our community to understand the origin of Black Friday and focus more on giving back to the community.
